Web 2.0 Social Media is a paradigm shift of such massive proportions that it could be the biggest shift since the industrial revolution. The momentum is not slowing. Yet many naysayers try to point out that “this social media stuff” is just a fad- a passing fad. Instead blogging, microblogging, social networking, bookmarking, crowdsourcing, reviewing, and other forms of social media networks or concepts are expanding and evolving everyday.

Johnny Carson’s Carnac the Magnificent could not have framed it better: “Social Media, Bruce Lee, the UFC.  .  . What’s a revolution, an institution, and a evolution.” Social Media is the revolutionary byproduct of Web 2.0 and blogging. It is a collaborative paradigm shift in communication and connectivity characterized, by Tim O’Reilly, as an “architecture of participation.” Yet what does it have in common with Mixed Martial Arts of the UFC and martial arts legend Bruce Lee? Bruce Lee description of his fighting philosophy: “Be formless… shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle; it becomes the bottle. You put it into a teapot; it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend…”  It was Bruce Lee’s creation of Jeet Kune Do that was the roots of Mixed Martial Arts. Jeet Kune Do relies upon multiple (mixed) styles no one more important than the other. Lee’s philosophy was that the opponent and circumstances dictated which discipline within Jeet Kune Do be used against an opponent. It is not fixed or rigidly patterned like traditional martial arts but rather it is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. Nearly 40 years later, the UFC represents the evolution of Jeet Kune Do by becoming the fastest growing sport on the planet.

Like Bruce Lee’s role in the creation of mixed martial arts,  blogging is the forefather or foundation on which Social Media was built. The connectivity that blogging brought to the masses is the basis for the Web 2.0 revolution that ushered in our current era where individuals have the power to create brands, mass media styled messages, and connect on a world wide basis with their targeted audience(s).

Twitter Signal to Noise Ratio Strategies: Many Fail Whale Efforts

Companies showing up on twitter to take advantage of the massive growth potential are often showing up without a strategy. In a vast majority of these cases, terrible mistakes are being made that weaken and even tarnish their brand.  The biggest problem, stemming from this lack of strategy, is message tone and makeup. Simply put there is a horrific Signal to Noise ratio at the heart of the problem.

Here are some simple steps to fix the problem of tone and noise in a company’s Twitter strategy:

  • Signal: For every 10 tweets, 7 tweets should be valuable information (with links) that will help your audience & information that is not about your company
  • Noise: For every 10 tweets, 3 should be about your company, they should give value, and they should be informative in nature

  • No Hard Sell: NEVER tweet the hard sell, act desperate to sell, or attempt to create (old school) urgency for your audience to buy anything
  • Mix: After repeating the formula of 7 signal to 3 noise, your next 10 tweets should be about recognition
  • Connect: In this set of 10 tweets, 5 tweets use @company-individual to recognize their work, engage, network, or ask to collaborate
  • Recognize: In this second set of 10 tweets, 5 tweets use RT (Retweet) to recognize someone’s writing, open lines of communication, and network to meet companies or individuals

Twitter: Web 2.0 Definition of Architecture of Participation

Tim O’Reilly the 2005 architect of the now famous definition of Web 2.0 foreshadowed the coming of the paradigm shift in media we are now seeing. The idea that individuals and companies could participate, collaborate, connect, and create is now in full swing–online.

Twitter: Micro Scale Example

Twitter’s social network is a solid example of an architecture of participation on a micro scale. Although it is not yet as functional as a blog, Twitter’s microblogging platform supports the architecture of participation:

  • Sharing links to resources
  • Developers creating open source tools for the Twitter community
  • Audio and Video links shared within the community
  • Collaboration between Twitterers in business, social, and political circles
  • Subculture of vernacular, semantics, and Twitter speak

O’Reilly’s mantra within his Web 2.0 definition should be the rallying cry manifesto for every entrepreneur, small business, and corporation: Creating network effects through an “architecture of participation.”

Us vs. Them

For companies like Intel, American Express, Clorox, and HP the power of microblogging, blogging and social networks produces:

  • Brand recognition
  • User participation
  • Measurement of message, products, and services
  • Viral opportunities
  • Reputation management
  • Breaking news opportunities
  • Communication and engagement with their audience
  • Crowdsourcing for new ideas

Conclusion: The Have “Nots” a Warning

For companies without a social media strategy, with no participation in social networks, and for those companies that do not publish a blog your time is coming. Your De-Evolution will take place as your competitors that are social media Web 2.0 first adopters and the second wave of adopters will fill the vacuum and void left by your lack of participation.

Worse yet, the consumer population looking for your brand online, within these social networks, will assume you don’t care about them or their concerns.

These consumers, made up of your current audience-clients and potential consumers, will hold conversations about your products and services. Some will compliment and evangelize your company-but you will never know it. Some will slam your brand, tell stories of dissatisfaction, and rant about your lack of participation-but you will never know it.

National Association of Realtors’ Twitter Strategy: Update

A few weeks ago, I wrote an open letter to NAR asking them what their Twitter strategy delivers to their constituency. My point was to highlight the fact that NAR dubs itself “The Voice of Real Estate” yet they did not give Realtors a voice when on the social media site Twitter.com.My original post “National Association of Realtors’ Twitter Strategy” shows the following screen shot of NAR’s Twitter account:

The date of this shot above was February 17, 2009 and it shows that NAR was follow 0 as in zero Realtors on Twitter.

Strategy for NAR:

The best strategy for NAR would be to follow what well known pundits like Guy Kawasaki and companies like Starbucks do with their Twitter strategy: follow everyone. On Twitter the best method to recognize your audience, and that is the main focus or should be for NAR, is to follow them when they follow you. Here is an example provided by Starbucks Coffee:

Starbucks follows all the people and companies that follow them. They engage their audience and provide their audience, consumers, and evangelists the opportunity to directly communicate with them.

3 Benefits For Following Everyone Who Follows You on Twitter:

You can’t receive DM aka direct messages from your audience of Realtors UNLESS you follow them back. Simply put when a Realtor follows you, the ettiquette and strategy of following them back immediately opens the lines of communication. This allows you 3 advantages:

  1. You can receive feedback on your products and services
  2. You can measure your marketing and social media campaigns
  3. You can open a direct dialogue with the audience you claim to serve

Update on the “New Strategy” at NAR

Apparently somebody is listening but not really understanding. Whoever is in charge of the NAR Twitter strategy decided to follow roughly 6% of the Realtors and professionals who follow them. Here is the NAR Twitter page as of March 3, 2009:

A Step in the Right Direction

Although this is a step toward the strategy they should consider, following 42 out of the 743 followers that are your direct audience and constituency seems a tepid effort at best. At least NAR is making progress in the right direction.

Susan and I presented our workshop “Web 2.0’s Impact on Job Seekers: The Changing Roles of the Resume, Job Search, and Job Seeker” at CSIX this past Tuesday to a packed house of over 110 hopeful job seekers. As we settled into facilitating this workshop, we realized that for the first time we were about to present our complete thesis and theme.

The decades of mass media dominance and stranglehold over the control and flow of information is waning. Today is the greatest time in human history for communication, connectivity, collaboration, networking, and delivering your message of value, expertise, and experience to your strategicially targeted hiring managers and companies.

There is a global conversation going on between bloggers, people networking and finding opportunities on Linkedin, resources and messages being broadcast on Twitter, and companies searching for human capital talent throughout the social media stratosphere.

Companies Adopting Web 2.0 and Blogs: Tools to Promote Business

Our friend and blogger Ray Schiel, of globalsocialmedianetwork.com, has produced a massive resource page that outlines the participation of 105 major corporations in blogging, 64 on Facebook pages, 12 podcasting, 12 crowdsourcing sites, and 100’s of companies microblogging on Twitter.

Job Seekers’ Tip: These social media tools are being used by major corporations to promote their products, services, and business practices. If you want to connect with your target company, and they utilize social media tools, then this is a major opportunity to connect as well as demonstrate your understanding of their efforts.

Companies Monitoring Web 2.0 and Social Media: Screening and Hiring Practices

Not only are major corporations utilizing these tools for their own business practices, they are using them to find new talent and perform due diligence on potential applicants. Computer World’s “One in Five Employers Uses Social Networks in Hiring Process” outlines a Careerbuilder.com survey of 31,000 employers. The results are very compelling:

1.  24% of hiring managers “found content on social networks that helped convince them to hire a candidate.” In addition hiring managers said that “profiles showing a professional image and solid references can boost a candidates chances for a job.”

2.  22% of the 31,000 employers said they “peruse social networks to screen candidates.”

3.  9% more of the 31,000 employers said they are planning to do so

4.  A total of 9,600 employers are going to search for candidates and perform due diligence rather than rely on resumes to tell a job seekers story

Deliver Your Value First

The conclusion is that job seekers must deliver their value first before attempting to deliver their resume. Social media and Web 2.0 are changing job search. The resume is no longer a job seeker’s marketing tool. It is up to job seekers, in this very rough job market, to utilize these tools in order to stand apart and become memorable.
